QURBAN

Qurban:
Qurban is the ritual slaughter of a livestock animal, with the meat shared amongst family, friends and the poor. Qurban also known as Adha, Udhiya, Adahi, Eid Ul Adha and Eid Aladha is a significant annual celebration on the Islamic calendar.

Meaning of Qurban:
Qurban takes place during Eid-Al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice. Eid-Al-Adha honours Prophet Ibrahim’s intention to become closer to God by following, without question, the instruction to sacrifice his son. At the moment of sacrifice, God provided a goat to be slaughtered instead.

The custom of Qurban, which comes from the Arabic word ‘Qurb’ meaning closeness, was then maintained in the sunnah by Prophet Muhammad (sallal lahu ‘alayhi wa salam). It should be performed once a year by every able household.

The Prophet (pbuh) said “O people, it is compulsory for every household to make a sacrifice yearly.” [Ahmed]

Eid-Al-Adha:
Eid-Al-Adha is a time that friends and family come together to celebrate in their best attire and exchange gifts. The animals sacrificed for Qurban are goats and sheep. The Qurbani meat is then divided into three equal portions: one for family, one for friends and one for people in need.

Rewards of Qurban:
Donating Qurban provides food and celebration for people who could not otherwise afford it. It also brings significant spiritual rewards for the person sharing with the poor.

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Whoever feeds a needy person until he is satisfied, Allah (SWT) will allow him to enter Paradise from a door, nobody will enter that door except those who did the same as him.” [Tabarani]
